Abstract: The worldwide water, resources and energy related development problems are calling for sustainable solutions utilizing sound theories and practices of water and wastewater engineering. Improvement of water quality and the effective implementation of water-use efficiency are recognized as instruments towards achieving the sustainable development goals. It is recognized as well that water issues are closely linked with other important global challenges including climate change, renewable energy, good health, food security, and ecosystem deterioration. Membrane technologies integrate multidisciplinary expertise and provide variable potentials to address issues towards creating sustainable urban water solutions. The presentation will explore the potentials of a novel forward osmosis membrane technologies in simultaneously recovering nutrients and pure water from municipal wastewater. The feasibility of this concept has been investigated experimentally using a bench-top FO system together with the numerical simulation of a scaled-up FO system. Good performance on both water production and nutrients recovery obtained in this work lead a future direction to transfer FO technology from scientific researches towards engineering application.
The presentation will also share some highlights of her other related research projects including on: Surface modification of FO membrane for improved performance; Development of novel pressure retarded osmotic microbial fuel cell process for simultaneous wastewater treatment and energy production; Monitoring and elimination of environmental emerging trace contaminants in WWTP; and Biogeochemistry for sustainable watershed management.
Speaker Profile: Dr. Wenchao Xue is working as Research Specialist at the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Change, School of Environment, Resources and Development of the Asian Institute of Technology. Dr. Wenchao received her PhD in Urban Engineering from the University of Tokyo, Japan, and her M.E. and B.E. in Environmental Science and Engineering from Tsinghua University, China. Her research interests cover environmental membrane and electrochemical technologies, resources/energy productive wastewater treatment, monitoring and elimination of environmental emerging contaminants, and sustainable watershed management. She also has consulting and engineering experience on contaminated site and groundwater remediation while working for an international consulting firm based in Yokohama, Japan. She held positions at the Department of Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering of Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand as postdoctoral fellow and later as a foreign lecturer teaching and supervising research of foreign postgraduate students.
Currently, Dr. Wenchao is undertaking various research projects granted by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Research Council of Thailand such as “Simultaneous wastewater treatment with electricity generation based on pressure retarded osmotic microbial fuel cell technology” and “Biogeochemical changes and adaptation mechanisms in response to anthropogenic impacts in watersheds”. She has published 7 refereed papers in high quality international journals having h-index of 6, and authored or co-authored publications in international conference and symposium proceedings. She also serves as a Journal reviewer for Water Research, Desalination, and Journal of Cleaner Production.
